چکیده

This programmatic effort has three long-term goals. The first is to simulate bioacoustic interactions within and near individual fish. We developed a methodology that combines x-ray CT scans with tissue elasticity measurements and finite-element modeling software (WHACR). This technique has provided significant insights and discoveries regarding toothed whale bioacoustics (Cranford et al., 2008b; Cranford et al., 2008c), and now, within a fish’s head. The second long-term goal is to improve and refine our ability to measure tissue elasticity in samples by building a portable device to measure physical properties from tissue samples. The third and final goal is to validated the finite element models and add more functionality to the WHACR software.

10: Virtual Experiments in Marine Bioacoustics: Whales, Fish, and Anthropogenic Sound

This is a programmatic effort has three long-term goals. The first is to combine medical tomography (primarily CT-scans) with finite-element modeling software, and tissue property measurements, to simulate the bioacoustic interactions between selected anthropogenic sounds and fish anatomy. This method has already been successful in providing insights on such phenomena in some marine mammals (Cr...

آلودگی صوتی به عنوان عامل استرس زا در گونه های جانوری آبزی

Sound travels very efficiently underwater, so the potential area impacted can be thousands of square kilometers or more. Anthropogenic activities such as commercial shipping, recreational activities, drilling, seismic exploration or energy production (hydroelectric power plants), have made underwater noise pollution an increasing and perhaps dominant factor in the aquatic environment. Nowadays,...

The Impact of Ocean Noise Pollution on Marine Biodiversity

Most marine animals, particularly marine mammals and fish, are very sensitive to sound. Noise can travel long distances underwater, blanketing large areas, and potentially preventing marine animals from hearing their prey or predators, finding their way, or connecting with mates, group members, or their young. Decreased species diversity in whales and dolphins was related to an increase in seis...

Acoustic playback experiments to study behavioral responses of free - ranging marine animals to anthropogenic sound

Growing concern about the effects of anthropogenic sound on marine life has highlighted the need for empirical methods to study behavioral responses of marine animals to specific acoustic exposures. Some effects have been discovered by observing coincidence of effects with sound exposure, e.g. beaked whales such as Ziphius cavirostris and Mesoplodon densirostris may mass strand during sonar exe...

Measuring the spatial distribution of sound pressure in a fish tank under laboratory conditions (Research Article)

Sound-related behavioural studies explore the effects of sound on underwater animals in tanks under controlled laboratory conditions. In this study, we aim to assess sound pressure distributions and gradients in a small-sized water-filled tank that can be used in behavioural studies to examine anthropogenic sound effects on fish and invertebrates and to raise awareness among scientists in the f...
